Happy Easter!

The heavens showed mercy on us and the sun came out for Easter weekend.  Saturday and Sunday were perfectly sunny until Sunday evening.  When the rain began to pour down again I felt my senses recoil in sadness.  Where are you, summer?

We went to a community Easter egg hunt on Saturday which was uncomfortably crowded and chaotic.  There were so many people that we couldn’t even see Eva hunting for eggs.  None of the adults could see their kids and the crowd became somewhat hostile.  I naively thought it would be a calm gathering since you had to buy tickets to get in and there was a cap to the number of tickets sold.  Apparently the cap was infinity because it was a madhouse.  The swarms of greedy kids and even greedier parents didn’t react well with my social anxiety.  Eva was oblivious and had a wonderful time.  Her only disappointment was when she informed us that the Easter bunny was just a woman in a costume.  Sorry, Eva.  But she scored a lot of candy at the egg hunt and that seemed to appease her.  I assume she had to knock a few kids over to come away with such a haul.  Good girl.

The REAL Easter bunny visited us on Sunday and left Eva with even more candy and a new princess watch.  She promptly put it on and then announced the time every minute for a few hours.  At bedtime she took off her watch and said, “I’m going to put this in your jewelry box so it can be safe.  I’ll put it by your special jewelry.”  Her watch is now part of the special jewelry in our house.  I love it.

We rounded out the day by dying eggs and then having our friends over for a pot roast dinner and games.  I rounded out the evening by eating an entire bag of Cadbury Mini Eggs.  My stomach was rounded out by bedtime.  It was a nice day.

Spring Break

Want to have a fabulously fantastic Spring Break?  Invite your sissy over.  The weather will suck most of the week.  You’ll go to the coast and it will feel like Antarctica.  Your daughter will get pummeled by a wave and shiver and cry from the cold, wailing, “I never want to go to the beach again!  Except in the summer!”  You'll have to eat your lunch shivering in the back of the van but you’ll still have a fabulously fantastic time.  You will watch movies and eat popcorn every night, you’ll go shopping and watch your niece change her pants in the parking lot while a stranger looks on, you’ll play Tetris and Dr. Mario, eat crepes for breakfast, go to the temple, sleep in, and laugh and laugh and laugh.

It will be fabulously fantastic and it will be over far too quickly.

Can’t it be Spring Break every week?

Foiled Again

The sun came out in beautiful warmth yesterday.  It was perfection.  My friend has been sick this week so I’ve been watching her 2 girls and we were able to break up the boredom and go outside for an adventure walk.  We warmed our souls and kept track of the number of times Aika urinated – 7.

After dinner Eva wanted to go for a bike ride and we thought it was a fantastic idea.  She ran outside to get her bike all ready while Michael and I gathered up shoes and a helmet.  By the time we made it outside, she had changed her mind and said she just wanted to sit down.  She was pale and sweaty and we did this all evening instead of enjoying the evening sun.

She and I were up most of the night while she heaved and groaned in agony.  Around 4 AM I could tell she was restless and I suspected she didn’t want me in her bed anymore.  My suspicion was verified when she declared in a weak, wobbly voice, “I don’t like how your breath smells.”  I took my cue and went back to my own room.  (And by the way, Eva, I don’t like how your Daddy’s breath smells but I still let him sleep in my bed.  Just sayin’.)

We were scheduled to go to a birthday party this afternoon at an indoor bounce house place.  We’re doing this instead.

That popcorn bucket is for puke – not popcorn.

I did manage to squeeze one little smile out of the poor girl though.

This is what I get for being nice and babysitting Typhoid Mary’s kids.  Lesson learned.

Chew on This

We love our Aika boy.  We’ve had him for 11 years and he’s a part of our family.

However, in his old age, he’s taken up chewing.  I don’t know why he’s doing it but it’s making me crazy.  Maybe he longs for puppyhood and is reliving the good ‘ol days.  Maybe he decided a new hobby was in order before he dies.  Maybe we don’t feed him enough.  Maybe he’s an instigator and likes seeing me freak out.  Maybe his brain is the size of a walnut and he's an idiot.   Who knows.

All I know is this: anything left on the floor is fair game to him. Even though we’ve purchased numerous chew toys for him, he doesn’t lay a tooth on those.  Nope. Only things that are off-limits taste good to him.

Like this blanket:

And his house shoes:

Eva’s slipper:

I had to sew the arm back on this poor baby:

And the tail back on this cute chipmunk:

And we certainly can’t forget the wool blanket he snacked on in Idaho.

Perhaps the worst assault came a few nights ago.

Surprise!

It’s been a dreary winter; a lot of rain, a lot of snow, a lot of gray skies.  I’m ready for Spring.  Our tulips started sprouting and I began to feel hopeful that the seasons are changing.

Then this happened.

Different Perspective

Take a look at the world through Eva’s eyes:

I’ll spare you the pictures she took of me laying in bed one morning.  And the ones she took of me tweezing my chin whiskers.

You’re welcome.
